Why won't my AVIF file open in my editor?

AVIF is a recent format and many apps — including older versions of Photoshop, office suites and built-in photo viewers — don't support it yet. Converting the image to JPG makes it compatible with virtually every program, site and device.

Will converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

Both AVIF and JPG are lossy, so there is a small additional loss when re-encoding, but at the default quality it's rarely visible. The trade-off buys you a file that works everywhere.
